Speakers at a discussion urged the government on Saturday to increase facilities for primary school teachers and bring all educational institutions under the monthly pay order scheme, reports UNB.

They came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion on 'MPO Bhukto Shikkha Protisthan Jatiyakoron Liaison Forum,' organised by Bangladesh Teachers Association at the National Press Club in the city, marking the World Teachers' Day.

They requested the government to reduce pay disparity.

This year's theme is 'Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.'

Awami League Advisory Council member and Chairman of Women Affairs Sub-Committee Dr Sultana Shafi was the chief guest. She said the teachers of primary and secondary level are enjoying few facilities.

She mentioned that many students scoring GPA-5 are incapable of properly writing a page in English and Bangla.

"We should improve the base of our education. As a Dhaka University teacher, I noticed our students' education quality was not satisfactory as the base was weak," she said.

Dr Md Badruzzaman Bhuiyan, Chairman of Dhaka University's tourism and hospitality management department, observed that the teaching profession could not attract brilliant students because of a lack of facilities.

"We should increase facilities to encourage the youths to join this profession," he said.

Another DU teacher Dr Mohsina Akter Khanom, said, "We should put emphasis on primary level to improve education."

Md Najrul Islam Rony, spokesperson of the platform, urged the government to reduce salary disparity, increase others facilities and nationalise all schools.

BTA Secretary General Md Mesbahul Islam Prince moderated the function.
