DU CORRESPONDENT | December 29, 2025 00:00:00

Inqilab Moncho began a total blockade at Shahbag intersection in the capital on Sunday, demanding the arrest and trial of the killers of Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

Although the programme was scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm, protesters started gathering at Shahbag from 11:00 am. They took position on the adjacent roads and chanted slogans demanding justice. People from different walks of life joined the protest in solidarity.

After 2:00 pm, Inqilab Moncho leaders and activists completely blocked Shahbag, bringing all vehicular movements through the intersection to a halt.

They have been holding a continuous sit-in at Shahbag since Friday afternoon, demanding the arrest and trial of Osman Hadi's killers.

On Saturday night, after announcing a plan to spread the movement nationwide with a total blockade in the divisional cities, the activists temporarily left the area. The announcement was made by the organisation's member secretary, Abdullah Al Jaber.

Before the declaration of the total blockade, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sazzat Ali visited Shahbag at around 11:00 pm on Saturday. They briefed them on the investigation progress of the Hadi murder case.

They assured that the chargesheet in the case would be submitted by January 7 and pledged to ensure that the trial would be completed swiftly. However, Inqilab Moncho rejected the assurances and announced fresh protest programmes, leading to the total blockade on Sunday.
