Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain continued their sit-in in front of Nagar Bhaban in the capital for the fifth consecutive day on Monday, demanding that he be sworn in as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

They under the banner of 'Amora Dhakabashi' (We are Dhaka city dwellers) gathered in front of Nagar Bhaban in the morning.

They started their programme at 11:00am and continued until 4:00pm to meet their demand.

The supporters put blockade on both sides of the road from Bangabazar market area toward Gulistan via Nagar Bhaban, halting traffic on the street.

They have announced that they will continue their movement until Ishraque is sworn in as mayor.

They threatened to go on tougher movement if their demand is not met.

The supporters locked all the entrances to Nagar Bhaban, suspending official activities there.

Officials and employees could not enter Nagar Bhaban, local people said.

The people arriving at the building for services were forced to return without receiving assistance.

The supporters said the court has declared Ishraque mayor of DSCC.

The Election Commission has also issued a gazette notification declaring him as mayor of DSCC.

The local government, rural development and cooperatives ministry is yet to hand over responsibility to Ishraque, they said.

Meanwhile, Ishraque has demanded resignation of those from the government who are working in favour of a particular party.

They (some advisers) made it clear what role they would play during the next election as they are trying to bar the BNP candidate's efforts to become DSCC mayor, he said in his verified Facebook on Monday.
