Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a protest rally in the capital on Saturday night, condemning involvement of Islami Chhatra Shibir's members in crimes such as sexual violence and harassment against women, staging a "drama" of abduction and disappearance, disrespecting victims of real enforced disappearances, spreading misinformation online, etc.
The procession began at 9:00 pm from the Central Shaheed Minar. It passed through the Raju Sculpture in Dhaka University (DU) and ended at Shahbag with a brief rally. Leaders and activists of the JCD central committee along with members of the DU, metropolitan and various college units participated in the programme.
Speaking at the rally, JCD central president Rakibul Islam Rakib strongly condemned Chhatra Shibir for keeping its full committee undisclosed.
He alleged that the ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, its lawmakers, and top leaders of Shibir are collectively claiming that a culture of enforced disappearances allegedly returned to the country. Such campaigns are being carried out to create controversy around the government.
JCD central general secretary Nasir Uddin said, "When Shibir staged the latest incident of disappearance, the party told the media that Jisan Mia was the assistant international affairs secretary of its central committee. If he had not been involved in such a controversial act or staged the disappearance drama, we would not have known that he was a central Shibir leader."
JCD DU unit president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas alleged that since August 5, Jamaat-Shibir has been attempting to destabilise the country through 'anti-public politics'. The organisations have repeatedly supported individuals accused of harassing women and creating insecurity for women.
Our JU Correspondent adds, Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal staged a protest procession on the campus on Sunday, alleging that Islami Chhatra Shibir fabricated a narrative of enforced disappearance to shield one of its leaders.
The procession began at around 4:00 pm from Transport Square and concluded at the JU Central Shaheed Minar after marching across the campus.
JCD JU unit joint convener Humayun Habib Hiran alleged that Jisan Mia, a central Shibir leader, was involved in raping a woman and killing her unborn child, and subsequently staged the incident as an abduction to mislead the public.
JCD JU unit convener Zahir Uddin Md Babar said, "The 2024 uprising created a historic opportunity to build unity. But Shibir has been undermining that environment."
