JCD stages sit-in, demands removal of DU VC

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders and activists staged a sit-in in front of the Dhaka University (DU) administrative building on Monday, demanding resignation of the DU vice-chancellor (VC) and the proctor.

The demonstration began at 12:00pm, chanting slogans for resignation of the DU VC and the proctor. The protesters also demanded justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a DU student and a JCD leader.

DU-unit JCD activists alleged that the VC and the proctor failed to ensure security for students on the campus.

Gonesh Chandra Roy Sahos, president of the JCD DU unit, said, "Thirteen days have passed since Shammo's murder, but there is no progress in the investigation and trial process."

The DU administration has failed to bring perpetrators to justice in any cases, he added.

Nahiduz Zaman Shipon, general secretary of the JCD DU unit, said, "Shammo's murder has caused fears among students. Crimes like hijacking, stabbing and even killings have allegedly been commonplace."
