Commuters especially government job candidates and admission-seekers of different institutions underwent immense suffering in the capital due to transport strike on Friday.

The strike was enforced by the transport owners and workers to press the government either to withdraw the latest price hike of petroleum products or increase transport fares.

Apart from admission tests of seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University, there were also 19 job examinations of private and government organisations held on the day.

Due to absence of public buses, CNG-run auto-rickshaws and rickshaws dominated the city roads as the drivers of those vehicles charged extra fares from the passengers.

Ride-sharing motorbikes also charged exorbitant fares, alleged passengers.

Despite the transport strike, a few public buses and goods-laden vehicles also operated on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.

Government job examinees from Narayanganj, Kanchpur, Chittagong Road and other areas on the city outskirts underwent immeasurable woes due to the strike.

Students expressed sorrow and anger as they had to spend extra money for reaching their respective exam halls.

Many said they were quite unaware of the suddenly enforced transport strike.

"I had to face difficulties in attending my admission test centre at Dhaka College. I had to pay Tk250 rickshaw fare to reach Dhaka College from Basabo," Md Faisal told the FE.

"I came from Signboard to Tejgaon College for appearing my admission test. I had to pay Tk350 CNG-run auto-rickshaw fare," Abidur Rahman told the FE.

"I've come from Kazla of Jatrabari to attend a recruitment test of the Education Engineering Department (EED) at Ideal School and

College, Motijheel. I had to spend Tk250 against Tk100 to120 only to reach the exam centre from my residence (Kazla)," Nikhil Chandra Mazi, a job candidate told the FE.

Admission test of the 'commerce unit' of DU-affiliated seven colleges for the first year honours programme under the 2020-21 academic session was held on the day.

The test was held from 11am to 12:00pm with total marks 120, said a press release.

A total of 24,071 students applied against 5,310 seats of the 'commerce unit' where around five students will vie for one seat.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman visited the Dhaka College exam centre along with 'commerce unit' test coordinator and DU Business Faculty Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Abdul Moyeen, Registrar Probir Kumar Sarker, Dhaka College Principal Prof I.K. Selim Ullah Khondaker and others.
