A group of job seekers and students demonstrated in city's Shahbagh on Sunday urging the government to curb the percentage of quotas for jobs, reports bdnews24.com.

Hundreds of people identifying themselves as an "alliance for preserving the rights of general students" gathered outside the Central Public Library at 11am.

They carried placards with slogans calling for reforms to the quote system. No more than 10 per cent of jobs should be given under quotas, they demanded.

Under the current system, 56 per cent get government jobs through quotas.

Police drove off the protesters from the scene after 40 minutes. A delegation of four submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office afterwards. The alliance makes five demands, including reduction of quota to 10 per cent and merit-based appointment.

They have also called on the authorities to ensure the same age limit for all for entry to government jobs and stop people from using quotas more than once in entry tests. "Our movement calls for reforms.
