Job seekers have issued an ultimatum to the government, setting April 12 as the deadline to raise the maximum age limit for entry into government jobs to 35, citing prolonged academic disruptions that have delayed graduation timelines.
The announcement was made at a press conference held on Saturday at the TSC premises of Dhaka University (DU), organised by the Dhaka University Journalists' Association.
In a written statement, job seeker Shariful Hasan Shuvo said recent instability, extended session delays, and other unforeseen circumstances have prevented many students from completing their education on time. As a result, a significant number are being unfairly excluded from applying for government jobs.
He noted that students have been protesting for more than 12 years, demanding an increase in the age limit, but the issue has remained unaddressed despite repeated demonstrations.
Speakers at the press conference said the demand is consistent with international standards and has also been included in the BNP's 31-point manifesto, specifically in its 23rd clause.
Several political parties have expressed support for the proposal and that the issue has been discussed multiple times with State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari.
Shuvo claimed the minister had previously expressed agreement in principle to raise the age limit to 35, considering the challenges faced by students and the need to resolve the long-standing movement. However, despite such assurances and recommendations, no concrete steps have been taken so far.
"Despite repeated promises, our demand has not been fulfilled. Instead, we have been disappointed time and again," Shuvo said. He also alleged that protesters have faced harassment, including political labelling, attacks, and legal cases, with some participants sustaining serious injuries.
The job seekers warned that if their demand is not met by April 12, they will launch a tougher nationwide movement involving job aspirants from across the country.
