Saudi Arabia launched a programme on Wednesday for the rehabilitation of people affected by floods and cyclones in Bangladesh.
The programme is funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and will be implemented by the Sumbulah Charity Association.
"This is part of the ongoing humanitarian efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia(KSA) to support those affected by natural disasters around the world, including in Bangladesh," said Mr. Abdulaziz Fahad M Al Ibrahim, Deputy Head of Mission of the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka.
The Rimal Cyclone, which struck the coasts of Bangladesh in May 2024, caused widespread damage, leading to catastrophic flooding that severely damaged infrastructure and homes, greatly affecting the lives of people in coastal areas.
"Despite the efforts of Bangladeshi authorities to evacuate one million people to safe shelters, the scale of the destruction highlighted the urgent need for sustainable relief projects," Mr. Ibrahim added.
The programme, titled "Distribution of Food Baskets and Construction of Shelters for Flood and Cyclone Victims," aims to alleviate the suffering of the affected people.
Under the programme, 195 food baskets containing rice, lentils, vegetable oil, salt, and sugar will be distributed.
Under the programme 630 permanent shelters with specifications ensuring safety and stability will be constructed in 9 affected areas, including Noakhali, Feni, Comilla, Lakshmipur, Bhola, Barguna, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, and Bagerhat.
"These humanitarian efforts, overseen by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center in partnership with the Sumbulah Charity Association, reflect the directives of the wise leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz," Mr. Ibrahim stated.
Established in 2015, the center has implemented more than 3,117 projects in 105 countries worldwide, with a total value exceeding US$ 7.0 billion.
These projects span various vital sectors in cooperation with 187 international and UN organizations, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to its leadership role in alleviating the suffering of affected populations and achieving sustainable development.
