Life-term fugitive convict held

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested a fugitive convict who was awarded life-term imprisonment in a case filed over gang-rape of a woman.

Assistant director (Media) of RAB-2 ASP Khan Asif Topu said on Friday.

The convict, Barkat Hossain Roman, and the victim woman had been previously acquaintances of each other.

Barkat in the name of sightseeing brought the victim to his friend's house at PC Culture, Mirpur, where she was raped by turn.

Her father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Mirpur Model Police Station accusing two persons.

Barkat Hossain was arrested and spent about one year in jail since then. He later secured bail from court and went into hiding.

The investigation officer of the case submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing Barkat. The court after completing trial proceedings convicted him of gang-rape and awarded him life-term imprisonment and Tk 0.1 million fine.

The RAB stepped up its surveillance and managed to arrest him from Gulshan neighbourhoud of the city on Thursday night.
