Man gets life term in Satkhira rape case

SATKHIRA, June 25 (UNB): A tribunal sentenced on Monday a man to life term imprisonment in a case for raping a female student of class-V in the district.

Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Hosne Ara Aktar handed down the verdict on Monday noon.

The convict is Rana Sardar (35), son of late Pachu Sardar of Bilganj village of Kalia upazila of Narail district.

The court also fined him Tk 0.1 million. In default, he has to suffer six months more in jail.

According to case statement, Rana used to live at Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira district and on July 8, 2005 he kidnapped the 14-year old victim and her 12-year friend. He took them to a hotel at Jashore and raped the elder girl.

Tipped off, the family members rescued the duo and filed a kidnap and rape case on July 9, that year.

The victim was a student of class-V of Khordo BRAC School of Kalaroa upazila.

The Public Prosecutor of the case Jaharul Hidar Babu said after taking depositions from nine witnesses and reviewing all the documents, the court handed down the verdict in absence of the accused.
