CHATTOGRAM, May 21: A large number of Rohingya people are in the port city of Chattogram during the holy month of Ramadan.

Many of the Rohingya people including children and women are begging and collecting Jakat money in the city.

Kulsum Ara Begum, a Rohingya woman, along with four children and her husband crossed the border into Bangladesh and later reached the port city. She is going from door to door for Jakat and new clothes for her children during the month of Ramadan.

She said, "Rohingya people heard that the people of Chattogram are rich and give huge money and clothes to the poor during the month of Ramadan. So, we came here like many others through the border and are trying to collect money now."

If anybody helps them stay here, they will live in Chattogram, she said. "Many Rohingya people are living here. I hope someone of them will help her family to live here," she believed.

Not only Kulsum, but also many other Rohingya people are here in Chattogram. Many of them are seen in front of markets and at other important places in the city.

Sources said a large number of Rohingya used to cross the border illegally every year.

Talking to The Financial Express, some of the Rohingya who came to Lal Khan Bazar area said they came here for money. They are begging or searching for jobs here. As they can speak the local language, they can easily deceive the police and the law enforcing agencies.

The government of Bangladesh has taken measures to prevent the border crossing at Teknaf. Sources said the concerned authorities were trying to confirm the present situation of Rohingya people who camped across the Naf River with an intent to cross into Bangladesh. All precautionary measures were taken by the concerned authorities to prevent any intrusion of Rohingya into Bangladesh, said the sources.
