Dr AK Abdul Momen, who was sworn in as the new foreign minister on Monday, said the landslide election victory of the Awami League has simultaneously brought huge responsibility for it too.

"The people have voted us to power again through a huge mandate. So, their expectations are also high. Meeting the people's expectations will be a great challenge for us," he told the media just before entering Bangabhaban to take oath as a cabinet member.

"I am deeply grateful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for placing trust in me by giving me a berth in her cabinet," said Dr Momen who served as the Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2009 to 2015.

The minister added: "Our priority will be to fulfil people's expectations. We have to prioritise how we will accomplish this task to meet people's expectations."

The Prime Minister has unveiled a string of roadmaps including Vision 2021, Vision 2030 and Vision 2041. Implementing these visions will be a big challenge. So, they have to chalk out strategies in this regard, he said.

The new foreign minister sought support from the people from all walks of life and said without the support of the country's people, these tasks cannot be accomplished.

Dr Momen, younger brother of outgoing finance minister AMA Muhith, was elected from Sylhet-1 constituency after Muhith announced retirement from politics.

Dr Momen has a PhD degree in economics and an MBA in business administration from the Northeastern University (Boston), an MPA in public administration, public policy and international economics from the Harvard University (Cambridge), an LLB, an MA in development economics and a BA (Honors) from the University of Dhaka.
