Mobile phone traders stage demo, block road

Mobile phone traders staged a demonstration by blocking the key road in front of the Jamuna Future Park in the capital on Tuesday in protest against the government's plan to implement the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system.

The protest began at around 11:45 am and disrupted traffic along the Kuril-Bishwa Road to Rampura route, causing significant congestion on both sides. However, the traffic movement returned to normalcy on the roads of the adjoining areas after their programme.

The traders, under the banner of Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB), are repeatedly calling upon the authorities concerned to hold discussion with them regarding the NEIR system, which is scheduled to be launched on December 16.

Traders said their requests for dialogue have gone unanswered, forcing them to take to the street and block road to draw attention of the authority concerned.
