Summons over graft charges

Morshed Khan, Howlader seek more time to appear before ACC

FE Report | September 19, 2018 00:00:00

Former Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan and Jatiya Party (JaPa) secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader on Tuesday sought more time to appear before the national anti-graft authority over graft allegations.

The two persons were separately summoned by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday for their alleged link to corruption, said ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

ACC summoned Mr Khan, a senior BNP leader, and his wife Nasreen Khan for questioning over their alleged connection in embezzling Tk 3.83 billion borrowed from banks in favour of Citycell, country's oldest mobile phone operator.

Mr Khan sought time extension to the ACC through his lawyer, who showed illness as a cause behind his client's absence at the ACC.

The JaPa secretary general was asked to appear before the ACC headquarters over his alleged accumulation of wealth from unknown sources.

Though Mr Howlader remained absent in the ACC interrogation showing illness as a cause, he participated in an election campaign with JaPa president HM Ershad held in the city's International Convention City, Basundhara (ICCB).

Earlier, on June 28, 2017, ACC deputy director Sheikh Abdus Salam filed a case against 16 people including BNP leader Morshed for allegedly embezzling Tk 383 crore from AB Bank.

The accused were Pacific Telecom Bangladesh Ltd (PTBL) that holds major share of Citycell, its chairman Morshed Khan and vice-chairman Asgar Karim, director Nasir Khan and CEO Mehboob Chowdhury.

Citycell, the country's first mobile phone operator, has been out of service since October 2016.

Morshed Khan's son Faisal Morshed Khan was also summoned in connection with another case and has been instructed to appear on September 20.

He was called upon over a case of money laundering filed with the Gulshan police station in 2013.
