CHATTOGRAM, Oct 12: Most Proctors and provosts of Chattogram University (CU) never think of staying on the campus after the office hours.
Sources said CU proctor who is designated to maintain law and order of university is used to living in the port city, about 22 kilometres off the university.
CU provosts who are responsible for the management of halls round the clock are following the same practices.
As a result, they could not know about what is happening on the campus or in the halls after the office hour. The provosts go to the halls once in a day and sign only necessary papers of the students. They do not bother to look after the students on a regular basis. They have been neglectful of their duties, hampering academic activities at CU.
After brutal killing of BUET student Abrar Fahad, the absence of provosts and proctor on the CU campus have come to the fore afresh.
The students, wishing not to be named for fear of reprisal, said they are not happy with performance of proctor and provosts who remain frequently absent on the university campus.
The students alleged during the clash between Bnagladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Bijoy group at Suhrawardy Hall on September 01 both proctor and provost of the hall were not present on the campus. They were informed of the incident over telephone.
In many previous unwanted circumstances, the students could not contact the proctor and the provost in time of need.
In their absence on the campus, even law enforcers cannot perform their duties properly if any incident happens as they need cooperation from the proctor to tackle the situation.
Sources said Prof Abdul Haque is the provost of Alaol Hall while Prof MM Manirul Hasan hold the post of provost of Sir F Rahman Hall.
Similarly, Prof Shahed Bun Sadik, the provost of Shahajalal Hall, Professor Dr Mohammed Bashir Ahamed, the provost of Suhrawardy Hall, Prof Dr Muhammed Golam Kabir, the provost of Shah Amanat Hall, Prof Dr A K M Mainul Haque Miajee, the provost of Abdur Rab Hall, Prof Dr Khaled Misbahujjaman, the provost of Master Da Surya Sen Hall, Prof Dr Laaila Khaled Ankhi, the provost of Shamsunnahar Hall, Parvin Sultana, the provost of Priti Lota Hall and Prof Dr Md Abul Kashem, the provost of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall.
Of the provosts, only Prof Dr Laaila Khaled Ankhi of Shamsunnahar Hall, Parvin Sultana of Priti Lota Hall and Prof Dr Md Abul Kashem of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall stay on the campus.
Prof Dr Shirin Akter, acting vice chancellor of CU said, "It is fact that proctor and provosts are not staying on the campus now. If anyone cannot stay there, he or she should resign from the posts. We will take action against those who are not staying on the campus."
