The teachers and employees of non-government MPO-listed (monthly payment order) educational institutions called off Monday their hunger strike programme following government assurance of meeting their demand for nationalisation of the institutions, reports UNB.
Carrying Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's words of assurance, Secondary and Higher Secondary Division Secretary Md. Sohorab Hossain and Technical and Madrasa Education Division Secretary Md Alamgir went to the fasting teachers in front of the National Press Club around 5.30 pm. Following that the teachers withdrew their strike.
Joint General Secretary of the association Md Robiul Islam told the news agency over the phone that they were calling off their programme by putting faith in PM's promise.
He said the secretaries assured of meeting their demand.
He also said their demand for proper increment and allowances for special days will be met within short period.
The teachers and employees started the hunger strike on January 15 as their demand for nationalising all educational institutions having MPO facilities went unheeded even after a five-day sit-in since January 10.
