Allegations surfaced from different parts of the country that some leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the 11-Party Alliance came under attack following the 13th National Parliamentary Election, held on Thursday.
NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, in his verified social media status on Friday, said several leaders and grassroots activists had been reportedly assaulted, while in some areas their family members had allegedly been threatened.
The incidents raised concerns among political observers about the environment regarding the country's democratic transition.
Sarjis Alam, the 11-Party Alliance candidate for Panchagarh-1 and chief organiser of NCP (northern region), in his social media status said, "So far, in Panchagarh-1 constituency, some BNP leaders and activists have allegedly carried out attacks and issued threats at more than 30 locations against our leaders and activists, targeting their homes and business establishments. Many are unable to stay in their own houses."
"BNP must clearly state whether it still wants to continue politics of revenge in the old style. We have entered politics to bring change. We are here to replace the old, dirty political culture with a new form of politics."
"Power is not permanent. We call upon those who are overenthusiastically involved in such actions to correct themselves," he added.
