January 05, 2026 00:00:00

FE REPORT

New Chief Justice (CJ) Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has pledged to take necessary steps to reduce the long-standing case backlog.

He has also expressed his intent to take measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of judges, lawyers, and the large number of litigants who come to the court to seek justice.

The chief justice made the promise during a felicitation programme accorded to him by the Attorney General's Office and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday.

Acting attorney general Mohammad Arshadur Rouf and SCBA President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon delivered speeches at Sunday's programme.

At the event, the chief justice also expressed his intention to introduce some measures that would contribute to the overall development of the judiciary, particularly the infrastructure of the district-level courts.

He expressed hope to build on the roadmap laid down by his predecessor, Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed, with some alterations and modifications.

The chief justice urged the Bar, particularly the office bearers of the Bar Council and the SCBA, to organise regular training programmes for advocates.

The acting attorney general said political roguery had been established in the country over the past 15 years through the misuse of the judiciary.

The SCBA president said the filing of false cases must be stopped to reduce the backlog of cases in courts. He hoped the chief justice would ensure an independent judiciary.
