DU 1st-year hons classes begin Sep 7

The authorities of Dhaka University (DU) announced on Thursday that first year hon urs classes of the academic session 2021-22 will begin on September 7 (Wednesday). This decision was taken at the meeting of Dean's committee, with DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair. — DU Correspondent

Entry test of DU-affiliated 7-colleges' science unit held

The admission test of Dhaka University (DU) affiliated seven colleges of 'Science' unit was held on Friday for the first year honours programme for 2021-22 academic session. The test was held from 3:30pm to 4:30pm with total marks 120, said a press release. A total of 39,521 students applied against 6500 seats of 'Science' unit where around 6 students will vie for one seat. Of the 120, 20 marks were given on the basis of results of School Secondary Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and the tests were held on the rest 100 marks (mcq). DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman visited Dhaka College exam centres. No electronic devices, including calculator, mobile phone, and electronic watch were allowed into the exam halls.  — DU Correspondent

Class X student ends life in Dhaka

A class X student of a private school allegedly died by suicide in the city's Motijheel area early on Friday. The dead is Oishi Bhowmik (15), a student of Siddheswari Girls High School. Father of the girl, Subal Chandra Bhowmik, found her hanging from the ceiling of her room around 11:00 pm on Thursday and rushed her to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), according to police. She was declared dead by doctors at 12:10 am on Friday, said Bacchu Mia, inspector in-charge of DMCH police outpost. "Her father told us that she took the extreme step after being scolded for not studying hard as she was slated to take the SSC exams next month," he said. "The body has been sent for an autopsy," said Bacchu Mia. — UNB

Two Indians held with smuggled drugs in Lalmonirhat

Two Indian nationals were arrested with smuggled drugs near the international border in Lalmonirhat, police said on Friday. The arrestees are Hossain Ali and Jahangir Alam, said Shaha Alam, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha thana. Police arrested them on Thursday night from near the Gendukuri border of Tongbhanga union in Hatibandha upazila during a drive, said the OC. — UNB
