BD sees one more Covid death, 15 cases
Bangladesh reported one more Covid-linked death and 15 cases in the 24 hours to Friday morning. With the new numbers, the country's total fatalities rose to 29,434 and caseload to 2,036,612, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The daily case test positivity rate rose to 0.79 per cent from Thursday's 0.45 per cent as 1,894 samples were tested. The mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.45 per cent and the recovery rate at 97.51 per cent. In November, the country reported 10 Covid-linked deaths and 1,345 cases. Bangladesh registered its highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year and its highest number of fatalities of 264 on August 10 the same year. — UNB
Two injured as gas cylinder
fitted in car catches fire in city
Two people suffered serious burn injuries after a gas cylinder fitted in a car caught fire in the city's Asad Gate area on Thursday night, police said. The injured are Rubel Dutta, 45, owner of the car, and Uzzal Kumar, 35, driver of the vehicle, Nayan Biswash, brother-in-law of Rubel, said. The incident occurred at around 10:30 pm as Rubel was returning home from his office, Bacchu Mia, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, said. Rubel and Uzzal are now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Nayan said. — UNB
Butterfly fair held at JU
A day 'Butterfly Fair-2022' was held at the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus on Friday. JU Zoology Department organised the fair to raise awareness among people to conserve butterfly in the environment. JU Pro Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Sheikh Md Manzurul Huq inaugurated the fair on the university campus. The fair featured a drawing competition for children, photography exhibition, butterfly exhibition, butterfly-shape kite flying competition for children, butterfly race, debate competition and documentary exhibition on 'Butterfly and its Habitat'. — BSS
Teacher gets eight yrs in jail for sexually harassing student
RANGAMATI, Dec 02: A Rangamati court on Thursday sentenced a music teacher to eight years imprisonment for sexually harassing a female student for two years. Rangamati Women and Children Tribunal Judge AEM Ismail Hossain also handed the teacher a Tk 500,000 fine, Md Saiful Islam, the public prosecutor of the court, said. The court asked the district's deputy commissioner to give the fine to the student after taking it from the convict, he added. According to the case statement, Ranajit sexually harassed his 18-year-old student at least three times while teaching her at her home. Later, the girl's father filed a case accusing the teacher under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 at the local police station. — UNB
