Three farmers killed

in Pabna road crash

Three farmers have been killed and five others injured as a goods-laden truck rammed into a three-wheeler, locally known as Nasimon, on Pabna-Santhia road in Pabna. The dead are Dhani (55), Khairul Islam Khokan (35), and Russell (28). All were residents of Rangamatia area of the Santhia upazila. The injured were stated to be critical and they were admitted to Pabna General Hospital. The victims were going to Santhia Upazila Sadar from Rangamatia to harvest paddy. Abdul Latif, inspector (investigation) of Santhia police station, said the Pabna-bound truck hit the Santhia-bound Nasimon from the opposite direction in the Rangamatia area around 4:30am, leaving three killed on the spot and five others injured. The bodies were sent to the Pabna General Hospital's morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that the truck was seized but the trucker managed to flee. — UNB

Youth stabbed to death over

badminton match in Cumilla

An 18-year-old youth has been stabbed to death over a badminton match in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla, said police. The deceased is Shafiullah, who was son of Ershad Mia of Khanka Sharif area under Brahmanpara Sadar upazila. Locals said Shafiullah's younger brother Sanaullah and a local Hridoy locked into an argument over the badminton match in the Khanka Sharif area on Thursday night. At one stage, Hridoy allegedly slapped Sanaullah. After a while, Shafiullah accompanied by some people went to Hridoy's house to settle the matter. At one point of argument between the groups, Hridoy and seven to eight others attacked Shafiullah with knives, leaving him critically injured. He was first taken to Brahmanpara Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead upon arrival. Brahmanpara police station's Inspector (investigation) Tomas Barua confirmed the murder saying that the body was handed over to the family after autopsy at the hospital. No case has been filed as yet in this connection, the inspector added. — UNB

BGB detains 16 Bangladeshis on

return from India illegally

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested 16 Bangladeshis, including a child, for illegally crossing the border from India into Bangladesh through Benapole border on. The arrestees are Mintu, 37, Roni, 28, Joni, 32, Kamal Pramanik, 22, Aslam, 32, Abu Salek, 36, Bellal Hossain, 41, Rafiqul Islam, 29, Sakibul Hasan, 17, Rashida Begum, 37, Rina Khatun, 27, Rakibul Islam, 7, Nazma Khatun, 30, Bonani Shikder, 35, Shahinur Rahman, 35, and Jihad, 27. They hail from different areas of Pirojpur, Narail, and Khulna districts. Lt. Col Saifullah Siddiqui, commanding officer of the BGB-49 Battalion, said the detainees had gone to India illegally through Satkhira border on March 18 and 21 in search of jobs. However, they were held while trying to return to the country through Dhanjkhola border with the help of brokers. A case was filed against them and they were handed over to Benapole Port Police Station, the BGB official added. — UNB

No dengue death reported

The country reported zero death from dengue in the last 24 hours until Friday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. As there were no new fatalities, the dengue death toll for the year remained unchanged at 569. Meanwhile, 53 new patients were hospitalised during this period, bringing the total number of dengue cases in Bangladesh this year to 100,764. Of the new cases, 18 were reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation, while 7 others were hospitalised in the Dhaka South City Corporation. Currently, 770 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country. Last year, dengue claimed the lives of 1,705 people, making it the deadliest year on record. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), there were 321,179 dengue cases and 318,749 recoveries in 2023. — UNB

Over 500 illegal establishments evicted on Chandpur-Cumilla highway

More than 500 illegal businesses and establishments have been evicted from the Chandpur-Comilla regional highway. The eviction drive was led by the district administration and the Roads Department of Chandpur, targeting illegal structures built along the road in the Doabhanga area of Shahrasti upazila on Thursday. A few days earlier, traders from Waruk Bazar, Doabhanga, and Kaliapara Bazar in the upazila were ordered to remove these establishments on their own responsibility. Shahrasti Upazila Executive Officer Md. Yasir Arafat said the drive aims to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate smoother vehicle movement. Local residents of Doabhanga reported that although an eviction drive had been conducted previously, the area was once again illegally occupied on both sides of the road shortly after. Wasiuddin Ahmed, sub-divisional engineer (Additional Duty) of the Public Roads Subdivision Chandpur, said the eviction of illegal establishments began last November, starting from Bakila Bazar in Hajiganj Upazila. — UNB
