Woman killed in road

accident in city's Banani

An unidentified woman, around 32 years old and homeless, was killed after being hit by an unknown vehicle in the capital's Banani area early Friday, police said. Sub-Inspector Md Sohel of Banani Police Station, said the incident occurred at around 02:30 am in front of the Naval Headquarters in Banani. The woman sustained critical injuries and was found lying on the road. Bieng informed, police rescued her and took her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 4:00am, where doctors declared her dead. The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy. — UNB

Fire guts over 100 shops

in Munshiganj

More than 100 shops were gutted in a devastating fire at Sreenagar Bazar of Munshiganj district early Friday. The fire-affected shops were in Lungi Patti, Baina Patti, Mithai (sweetmeats) Patti, Dudh (milk) Patti, Seka Ruti Patti, and Murgi (chicken) Patti. Deputy Assistant Director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Shafiqul Islam said the fire started from a yogurt shop adjacent to the Mithai Patti at around 02:00 am and spread soon.

Initially the night guards accompanied by others tried to douse the flame, they failed and sought help from the Fire Service, he said. Five firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flame after around six hours of efforts at 08:0 am, the fire service official said. The cause of the fire could not be known yet, he said. Manzurul Islam, owner of wholesale shop Anowar Bastra Bitan in the Lungi Patti, said he rushed from nearby Harpara village in an attempt to save his business but to no avail. "I lost lungis worth at least Tk 60 lakh." — UNB

Bar Council written exam

to be held on June 28

The written test for the enrollment of lawyers with the Bangladesh Bar Council will take place on June 28. "The written exam will be held between 09:00 am to 01:00 pm on the scheduled date," said Bar Council Secretary and District Judge Mohammad Kamal Hossain Sikder. Earlier, the first phase of the enrollment process-the Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) test-was held on April 25. A total of 13,258 candidates passed the exam. The results have already been published on the council's official website. — BSS
