Student dies after being
hit by IU teacher's car
KUSHTIA, Feb 10: An 11-year-old student died after being hit allegedly by the car of a teacher of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia on Thursday night. The deceased Umme Rukaiya, daughter of Monohar Hossain, a resident of the village in the upazila, was a Class V student of Srirampur Government Primary School. Shailkupa police station officer-in-charge Aminul Islam said the accident took place on Kushtia-Jhenaidah Highway at noon as a speeding car of IU political science department chairperson Assistant Professor Sherina Khatun hit Rukaiya while she (Rukaiya) was returning home from school, leaving her seriously injured on the spot. — UNB
51-year-old convict dies at DMCH
A 51-year-old convict died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Friday morning, police said. Md Iqbal, an inmate of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, was rushed to the emergency department of the DMCH after he fell sick in the prison early morning. Details about the convict could not immediately be known, Md Bachhu Miah, in-charge of DMCH Police Outpost, said. "Prison guard Md Shakil Khan brought him to the hospital." — UNB

GAZIPUR, Feb 10: A 42-year-old man has been executed at Kashimpur Central jail for killing Dr. Naznin Akhtar and her housemaid 17 years ago, authorities said on Friday. The execution of Amirul Islam took place on Thursday night, confirmed senior superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2. Amirul was son of Md Mandal of Patnitala Upazila in Naogaon district. — UNB
