An oil tanker of Meghna Petroleum Limited overturned on the busy airport road in the capital Monday, causing unbearable traffic congestion.

The incident took place at about 12pm as a left-wheel of the vehicle was separated from it near an intersection close to Harrat Shahjalal International Airport, senior station officer of fire service Abdul Mannan told the FE.

The tanker was going to Tongi area from Narayanganj.

Witnesses said the incident caused huge sufferings for the commuters for nearly five hours.

Mr Mannan said the driver and his colleague received minor injuries in the mishap. The tanker was carrying 9,000 litres of oil for the Asia Petrol Pump in Tongi area. The fire service men could save around 8,500 litres of oil, however.

"We have cleaned the scene fully so that no further accident takes place there," he said. "We took long time to clean the spot."

The traffic movement hampered for a long time as the firemen cleaned the scene, he said. "After 5:00pm, the traffic movement became completely normal."
