Only 17 female journalists get six-figure salary: Survey

Though the number of women entering the journalism profession has increased significantly in the country, only 17 of them get salary over Tk 100,000, according to a survey.
Of them, five female journalists get salary of Tk 250,000 or above while five others between Tk 150,000 and Tk 249,000 and the rest seven within the range between Tk 99,000 and Tk 149,000.
Bangladesh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (BCDJC) conducted the survey on female journalists working in print, electronic and online media and made the disclosure at an open discussion at EMK Centre on Saturday.
BCDJC and Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) jointly organised the open discussion on "Bangladesh Journalism: Media Leadership". Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury attended the programme as the chief guest while Vice-chancellor of National University Dr Harun-or-Rashid and Chief Executive of Steps Towards Development Ranjan Karmakar as the special guests.
ICS Executive Director Nyma Nargis presented the survey findings and said these 17 female journalists are working for the Daily Star, Ekattar TV, News 24, DBC News, Amader Arthonity, ATN News and Channel i.
BCDJC Executive Director Naymul Islam Khan also spoke on the limitation of the survey and said a wider survey would be conducted in time.
