People from all walks of life gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Saturday to pay their final respects to language movement veteran Ahmad Rafiq, according to agencies.
His body was brought to the Shaheed Minar at around 11:00 am, where individuals, organisations, and admirers assembled to honour him.
Following the tribute, a funeral procession carried his body to Ibrahim Medical College Hospital, where it was donated to support the training of medical students.
Ahmad Rafiq passed away on Thursday at the age of 96. He had been suffering from multiple health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney failure, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, electrolyte imbalance, bedsores, and lung infections.
Rafiq was born on September 12, 1929, in Shahbazpur, Brahmanbaria.
He played an active role in the 1952 Language Movement as a student of Dhaka Medical College.
Throughout his life, he received many accolades, including the Ekushey Padak, the Bangla Academy Award, and the Rabindra Sahitya Award for his outstanding contributions to literature.
