'Pirate' dies in Noakhali 'gunfight'

NOAKHALI, Mar 16 (UNB): A suspected pirate was killed in an alleged gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Char Omed in Companyganj upazila early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Majhi, 42, hailing from Sandwip upazila of Chittagong district.

Acting on a tip- off, a team of Rb-7 from Chittagong conducted a drive in the area early Friday, said AKM Zahirul Haq, additional superintendent of Noakhali police.

Sensing the presence of the elite force, the pirates opened fire on RAB prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Ibrahim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while the others managed to flee the scene.
