Police arrested five members of a gang after they injured a couple on Monday in the city's Uttara by attacking the duo with sharp utensils.
The arrestees are: Md Mobarak Hossain (25), Robi Roy (22), Md Alfaz Mia alias Shishir (22), Sajib (20) and Mehedi Hasan Sayeed (24).
The couple, Mehebul Hasan and Nasrin Akter Ipti, was on their way home on a motorcycle, when they saw the motorbike of Mobarak and Robi collide with a rickshaw on Road No 9 in sector No. 7 in Uttara.
After the couple protested the reckless driving, the duo of the gang threatened the couple, while also punched and kicked them, according to police and locals. Afterwards, the duo called more people of their gang, who attacked the couple with sharp utensils.
According to the local residents, there were about 20-22 members of the gang at the location of the attack.
Police rushed to the spot and arrested Mobarak and Robi.
A resident, who preferred not to named, said Mobarak and Robi from on board the police van threatened those who helped the police.
A team of Uttara West Police Station arrested Shishir on Tuesday from Uttara's Abdullahpur. Sajib and Sayeef were arrested from Gazipur on Wednesday.
Police recovered two locally made sharp utensils from the bank of Turag River on Wednesday after interrogating the arrestees.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Deputy Commissioner Rawnak Jahan of Uttara Division said all the individuals involved have been identified and arrested.
One of the victims, Nasrin Akter Ipti, filed a case with Uttara West Police Station in connection with the incident.
Locals said that the members of juvenile gang regularly gather in front of makeshift shops located beside Uttara High School and College. They also alleged that the gang were involved in acts of mugging in the area.
Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur, stated that the injured couple has received medical treatment and is now out of danger. He said that the arrestees were produced before court.
