Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a total of 14 individuals on various criminal charges during separate raids in the capital on Saturday.
RAB personnel arrested two individuals for their alleged involvement in killing auto-rickshaw driver Mahbub in Lalbag area. The arrestees - Danu (35) and Jhoni (38) - were the members of Picchi Monir criminal gang.
RAB-10 assistant director (media) Tapos Karmakar disclosed the development to the media.
He said Danu was arrested from Kamalapur area at around 10:40 pm, while Jhoni from Arambag area at around 11:30 pm on Saturday.
According to him, auto-rickshaw driver Mahbub Alam went outside his home on 31st December 2024 to celebrate the New Year. When Mahbub reached near J N Saha Road in Lalbag area, Danu, Jhoni and others swooped on him with locally made sharp weapons and chopped him indiscriminately. He died on the spot due to severe injuries.
Mahbub's mother Amena Begum filed a case with Lalbag Police Station, implicating Danu, Jhoni and several unknown persons. As a result, RAB started detective surveillance that led to their arrests.
Meanwhile, police arrested 15 individuals during raids in Mohammadpur area.
Assistant Police Commissioner of Mohammadpur zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) A K M Mehedi Hasan disclosed it to the media.
He said a team of police personnel of Mohammadpur and Adabar Police Stations nabbed them on Saturday.
The arrestees were: Rubel (27), Murad (25), Miraz (25), Javed (30), Sam (20), Mansur (36), Arif (24), Monti Patwari (27), Jamil (45), Sajal (28), Rashed (30), Soaib (22), Tahidul (18), Mahafuz (18), and Arif (25). All of them were sent to the court.
