Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) is going to observe World Standards Day-2014 today (Tuesday) along with other national standards organisations across the globe, reports BSS.
The theme of the day "Standards level the playing field" selected by the three organisations -- International Organisation for Standardisation, International Electrotechnical Commission and International Telecommunication Union.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on Monday on the eve of the World Standards Day.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid said there is no alternative to following "International Standards" to ensure constructive changes in country's economic development as well as compete with the developed countries in the era of globalisation.
International Standards could play a significant role in eradicating exiting economic disparity between developed and developing countries, he added.
"Existing technical barriers to trade in export would be overcome easily through practicing national standards in line with international standards," observed Abdul Hamid.
The President said different initiatives taken by BSTI would play a significant role in building awareness among the industrialists and entrepreneurs about products and quality of services.
He expressed the hope industrial and service providing organisations would practice international standards from the accountability for the country and people.
In a separate message, PM Sheikh Hasina said she is delighted to know that BSTI is observing the World Standards Day like other ISO (International Organization for Standardization) member countries.
Sheikh Hasina said role of "Standards" is highly important in building safe and sustainable world for all.
"We've emphasised in setting up national standards in product and service sectors in line with international standards, which is strengthening our capability in facing challenges of the 21st century as well as boosting trade in export," she added.
Sheikh Hasina expected that BSTI would contribute to developing skilled manpower to tackle global challenges alongside ensuring the practice of national standards.
