President urges public reps to respect people

President M Abdul Hamid urged the public representatives to show due respect to general people and behave well with them as they are the real source of the state power, report agencies.

"Show due respect to the people . . . Behave well with them," he said.

The President came up with the remarks while speaking at a reception accorded to him for his being elected as the President of the country for the second consecutive term at Guru Doyal College in Kishoreganj.

Zila Songbordhona Committee hosted the reception to Abdul Hamid.

The head of the state reiterated his call to the country's all political parties to nominate good candidates for the next general election in the greater interest of the country and its people.

"I urge all political parties to give nomination to good people for the next election in the greater interest of the country and its people," he said.

Referring to country's present political scenario, Abdul Hamid, a veteran political leader and former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, real politicians should be entrusted with the tasks of doing politics to bring about a qualitative change in politics.

The President urged the voters to choose the party, which would work to gear up country's overall development, in next Jatiya Sangsad election.

"Holding the chair of the President, I cannot deliver any political speech. But I can say people should take the right decision in casting their valuable votes and electing their local leaders," he added.

He further called upon the voters to elect the people who would not deceive the general public and misappropriate government's allocation in the name of different development projects, including "Food for Work".

Referring to his political background since his student life, President Abdul Hamid said he had to face many difficulties to reach the present position.

"In the meantime, I lost many of my near and dear ones, friends, fellow political colleagues . . . I recall their contributions with due respect and pray for their eternal peace," he added.

Seeking people's blessings, he said, "I want to spend the rest of my life for the welfare of the country and people."

In reply to a charter of demands of local people, the President assured them of providing all necessary cooperation to set up a full-fledged university in Kishoreganj and ensure smooth rail communication for here.

Kishoreganj Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate Md Zillur Rahman presided over the reception programme which was followed by a cultural programme.

Engineer Rejwan Ahammad Taufiq, MP, Afzal Hossain, MP, Sohrab Uddin, MP, Dilara Begum Asma, MP, district Awami League president Advocate Quamrul Ahsan Shahjahan, general secretary M A Afzal, director of Rastrapati Abdul Hamid Medical College Russel Ahmmad Tuhin, Kishoreganj municipality mayor Mahabub Parves, among others, were present on the occasion.

President Abdul Hamid went to his hometown Kishoreganj on a three-day visit to attend a number of programmes there.
