President Md Abdul Hamid asked all the universities of the country on Sunday to take pragmatic steps so that students can acquire knowledge about different contemporary issues alongside world-standard education, reports UNB.

The President gave the directive when vice-chancellors (VCs) of three universities -- Major General Md Salahuddin Miaji of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), Prof Md Giashuddin Miah of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMAU) and Prof Dr Al-Nakib Chowdhury of Pabna Science and Technology University (PSTU) -- met him separately at Bangabhaban on Sunday.

President's Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meetings.

Describing a university as the highest seat of learning, the President urged the authorities concerned to take realistic measures to make students more capable for the global competition after being equipped with necessary academic knowledge.

He also underscored the need for carrying out research activities at the universities and developing new varieties of flood-tolerant crops to cope with the adverse effects of climate change.

The VCs of the three universities apprised the President of the overall activities, including recent infrastructural development, academic activities and future plans, of their respective universities.

Earlier, outgoing Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister's Office Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury paid a courtesy call on the President in the afternoon.

During the meeting, Naser expressed his gratitude to the President for providing all-out support and cooperation to him during his assignment.
