Probe body submits report to HC

FE REPORT | October 21, 2020 00:00:00

The probe body formed to investigate the incident of gang-rape of a young woman on Murari Chand College (MC College) campus in Sylhet on September 25 submitted its report to the High Court (HC) on Tuesday.

The three-member committee placed the 170-page report through HC division registrar Md Golam Rabbani as per its September 29 directive, said deputy attorney general Nawroz Mohammad Russel Chowdhury.

After receiving the report, the HC bench of justices Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Mohi Uddin Shamim set November 01 for further hearing on the issue. However, DAG Nawroz did not say anything about the content of the report.

On September 29, the HC bench formed the committee headed by the Judge of Nari O Shishu Nirjatan Tribunal of Sylhet to conduct an enquiry into the rape incident by taking depositions from the victim, college principal, hostel superintendent, other concerned persons and informants who witnessed the incident.

The committee was asked to submit a report in the HC over the inquiry within 15 days.

The HC bench of Mozibur Rahman Miah and Mohi Uddin Shamim passed the order as a Suo Moto move after Supreme Court lawyer Muhammad Misbah Uddin brought some news reports regarding the issue to the attention of the court.

On the night of September 25, a group of BCL activists, some of them current and former students of the college, raped a woman after tying up her husband.

Later that night, the victim's husband filed a case accusing six named and two-three unnamed. So far, police have detained seven persons, including four named in the case.
