Prof M Shamsher Ali passes away

Professor M Shamsher Ali, an eminent nuclear physicist, pioneering educationist and a leading voice in science advocacy in Bangladesh, passed away on Sunday at a hospital in the city, report gencies.

He was 87.

A quiet yet towering figure in the nation's academic and scientific circles, Prof Ali's career spanned decades of groundbreaking work in nuclear physics, leadership in higher education and a lifelong dedication to the public understanding of science.

Born on November 9, 1937, in Bheramara, Kushtia, Shamsher Ali began his academic journey at the Dhaka University, where he completed his Bachelor's in Physics in 1959, followed by a Master's in 1960.

Prof Shamsher Ali is survived by his family, colleagues and countless students and admirers who will remember him not only as a scientist and teacher, but also as a passionate advocate for knowledge in service of the public good.

On the other hand, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam expressed deep shock at the death of Professor M Shamsher Ali.

In a condolence message, he prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.

The information adviser said nuclear scientist Prof Shamsher Ali has made outstanding contributions to the Bangladesh's education sector.

Meanwhile, Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan also expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Professor Dr. M Shamsher Ali.

In a condolence message, the vice-chancellor said the late Professor Dr. M Shamsher Ali was a talented teacher and researcher of the university, a prominent Islamic thinker and an internationally renowned nuclear scientist.

Meanwhile, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said Dr M Shamsher Ali was a lifelong seeker of truth and a committed humanist.

He said Dr Ali, who passed away early Sunday, endeavoured to bridge the realms of science and faith, drawing upon his profound understanding of both Islam and physics.

"May he rest in peace, and may Allah grant him a beautiful place in Jannatul Ferdous. May his unwavering pursuit of truth continue to inspire generations of young minds," Alam said, conveying his condolences to his son Jehan Ali and his family members.

On behalf of the Southeast University board of trustees, Chairman Rezaul Karim, along with its Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yusuf Mahbubul Islam and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Mofazzal Hossain expressed profound condolences to the bereaved family of the late professor and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul, said a press release.

Professor Dr. M. Shamsher Ali served as the founding vice-chancellor of Southeast University when it was established in 2002.

His life was dedicated to advancing science, education, and human knowledge and was marked by extraordinary success.

Dr. Ali was a respected scholar who made significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics, with numerous research papers published in international journals, it added.
