CHATTOGRAM, July 10: Life continued to remain paralysed in Chattogram on Wednesday as rain battered the port city for the eighth consecutive day.

People could not go out for doing important jobs as most of the low-lying areas went under knee-deep water. Even students were failing to go to school due to waterlogging.

The adjoining districts-Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari-also witnessed heavy rain.

The rough weather was hampering loading and unloading of container goods at the prime seaport of the country here on the day.

Besides, transportation of goods from the port and jetties was also being hampered due to waterlogging and the roads going under 3-4-foot-deep water.

Even transportation of essentials from the country's main commercial hubs like Khatunganj, Chaktai, Korbaniganj, Asadganj, etc. was also being disrupted by the waterlogging.

Businessmen at the hubs said they were incurring heavy losses because of the prevailing situation. On the other hand, truck drivers and day-labourers have been rendered jobless over the last several days.

The local meteorological department recorded 139.8 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours from 3:00 pm on Tuesday to 3:00 pm on Wednesday. The Met office advised the authorities to hoist the signal number 3 for the Chattogram port and Cox's Bazar due to the rough weather.

The heavy shower affected the normal life in the port city. The streets looked desolate as traffic was negligible due to the heavy showers.

The low-lying areas of the port city, including Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawk Bazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali, and Chaktai went under knee-deep water following torrential rain for several hours. So the inhabitants of those low-lying areas remained stranded.

Commuters suffered a lot as main thoroughfares and other important streets in the city were inundated. Office-goers and thousands of garment workers were the worst sufferers as many of them were compelled to stay indoors.

Rainwater entered many houses, academic institutions and businesses in the areas. Healthcare services at Maa O Shishu Hospital at Agrabad were disrupted as rainwater went onto its ground flood, locals said.
