Rape suspect dies in 'shootout' with cops in Satkhira

A man has been killed in an alleged shootout with police hours after he was accused of raping a schoolgirl in Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira, report agencies.

The dead is Sohag Sarker (26), a resident of Boalia village in Keragachi union.

The shootout took place at Hijaldi village in Chandanpur union around 2:30am on Sunday, said Biplab Kumar Nath, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kalaroa.

He was the prime suspect in a rape case filed on Saturday night with the thana.

Sohag molested a third-grade student on Saturday noon, the OC said citing the case dossier.

Police conducted an operation to arrest him immediately after the case was filed, he said.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Sohag and his associates hurled brick chips and bombs towards police. In retaliation, they fired back, triggering the gunfight.

Sohag was injured with bullet in the gunfight. Later, he was rushed to Kolaroa Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
