ELECTIONS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNIONS

Rape threat: Ali Hussen expelled for six months

Ali Hussen, a student of the Sociology Department at Dhaka University (DU), has been expelled for six months for threatening a DUCSU female candidate with gang-rape on social media.

The student was penalised following a probe though investigators did not find evidence of his involvement with any political party despite widespread allegations.

The university's Public Relations Office issued a press release on Wednesday (September 3) announcing the decision of Ali Hussen's expulsion.

According to the statement, Ali Hussen used offensive language and issued the rape threat against the female DUCSU candidate online. Based on the recommendations of a proctorial investigation committee, the university authorities decided to suspend him for six months.

Earlier, some social media users circulated old photos and posts of Ali Hussen, claiming he was linked to Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. However, the inquiry committee did not find any proof of political affiliation.

Ali's classmates said he is physically challenged and spends much of his time on social media. He often edited news reports and made negative posts about himself.

Assistant Proctor Sheherin Amin Bhuiya, a member of the investigation committee, said, "We did not find evidence that Ali Hussen was involved with any political organisation. He himself admitted he has no political affiliation. Apart from a few photos, which he has already explained, there was nothing to suggest his political ties."

She further said Ali confessed to have posted the offensive status out of sudden anger and later apologised for his actions.
