Environment, Forest, Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Saturday said the conservation of fishing cats is not merely an issue of animal rights, rather it is a crucial step toward environmental protection, reports BSS.

"Every species plays a role in nature, and it is our responsibility to ensure their survival," she said.

"Killing fishing cats simply because they prey on fowls is unjust. If this trend continues, the species will face extinction. Raising public awareness is essential." Rizwana added.

She made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion and award ceremony organised by the Forest Department here marking the World Fishing Cat Day.

The environment adviser said the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) are actively conducting awareness campaigns on fishing cat conservation.

She stressed the need for engaging law enforcement agencies and wildlife conservationists in the campaigns to make those more effective.

Rizwana urged media to highlight the ecological importance of fishing cats.

Additionally, she called on DCs to promote wildlife conservation awareness in educational institutions.

"Beyond fishing cats, all endangered species must be protected from cruelty.
