Road accidents claim 4,144 lives in 2016

At least 4,144 people were killed in 2,316 road accidents across the country in 2016 while 5,003 people were killed in 2,626 accidents in the previous year.

Some 15,729 people were killed and 22,192 others injured in 7,655 road accidents across the country in last three years, according to a report prepared by Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA).

President of NISCHA Elias Kanchan presented the report at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the city on Sunday.

The report showed that 6,582 people were killed in road accidents in 2014 while 5,003 in 2015 and 4,144 in 2016. A total of 2,316 accidents took place in 2016 while 2,626 in 2015 and 2,713 in 2014.

Deaths in road accidents were reduced by 17.16 per cent in 2016 comparing to that of 2015 and by 23.98 per cent in 2015 comparing to that of 2014.

Elias Kanchan said roads accidents occurred due to various reasons such as unskilled drivers, rundown vehicles, weak traffic management system, commuters' unawareness, high speed, insufficient road space and lack of enforcement of laws.

Information on the accidents was collected from the reports published in six national dailies and broadcast by several TV channels.
