Road crashes kill 2,123 in four months: BJKS

Some 2,123 people were killed while 5,558 others injured in as many as 1,871 road accidents across the country in the first four months of the year, reports UNB.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity(BJKS), a passengers' welfare association came up with this statistics on Monday.

After monitoring the local, regional and online newspapers and television channels, the association made the report.

According to the report, some 206 people, who sustained injuries in separate road crashes during January-April, 2018 period, have succumbed to their injuries in different hospitals.

At least 1,979 people were killed and 4,727 others injured in 1,765 road accidents across the country during the corresponding period of 2017, the report said.

The numbers of road accidents have increased by 1.06 per cent than the previous year while the number of dead and injured ones increased 1.44 per cent and 8.31 per cent respectively.

The association recommended steps to reduce the casualties and damages on emergency basis after identifying the road accidents as national problem.

It also suggested the transport owners, workers, passengers and government for taking initiative in a coordinated way and taking steps to stop plying of unfit vehicles.

The platform also urged the government to refrain from giving vehicles to the drivers on daily lease basis.
