Rajshahi University (RU) students recently passed busy days with preparations for Pohela Boishakh, the first day of the Bangla new year, to be celebrated today (Tuesday).
To make the celebrations vibrant and lively, various departments and cultural organisations were actively engaged in decorations and final arrangements.
Students at the Faculty of Fine Arts were seen immersed in painting colorful traditional motifs, creating banners and festoons, and crafting symbolic installations for the Boishakhi procession. They were also busy making masks, portraits, and other thematic artworks.
In addition, different social and cultural organisations of the university were preparing for music, dance, and recitation performances. They expressed their commitment to showcasing Bangla culture and heritage, aiming to make this year's celebration and procession more colorful and memorable than ever.
Lecturer Md. Raihan Ahmed from the Department of Drawing, Oriental Art, and Printmaking, said, "Our key elements include representations of the national fish Hilsa, traditional horse carts, and the face of Emperor Akbar, who introduced the Bangla calendar."
RU Proctor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman said, "After a gap of two years, the festival is returning to public spaces in its full form. We've planned necessary arrangements such as traffic control and mobile patrols. We hope this vibrant festival will be celebrated in a well-organised manner."
JU Correspondent adds, Jahangirnagar University (JU) hosted a traditional 'vela baich' (raft race) on Monday, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of rural Bengal. It was organised by the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) on the occasion of Chaitra Sankranti 1432.
The competition was inaugurated at around 11:30 am at the university's Rong Pukur. A total of 11 teams, each consisting of two participants from the 11 residential halls, took part in it.
Shahid Salam-Barkat Hall secured the championship title, while Nawab Salimullah Hall finished as the runner-up. A F M Kamaluddin Hall secured third place. The event attracted a number of teachers and students, adding vibrancy and excitement to the occasion.
JU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Kamrul Ahsan said, "The competition was enjoyable and meaningful, and the enthusiasm of students made the event lively. Such initiatives demonstrate the younger generation's commitment to sustaining traditional practices."
Among others, JU Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Sohel Ahmed, Pro-VC (Education) Professor Mahfuzur Rahman, Proctor A K M Rashedul Alam, and JUCSU Vice-President Abdur Rashid Jitu and General Secretary Mazharul Islam were present.
