Rajshahi University (RU) is set to hold elections for the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU), hall unions, and student representatives in the Senate on September 25, with voting taking place in 990 booths across 17 centres in nine academic buildings.

Prof. F. Nazrul Islam, RUCSU polls Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), at a press briefing on Tuesday, said a total of 28,905 students are eligible to cast their votes in this year's polls.

"We have arranged 990 booths to ensure that the voters do not have to stand in long queues," he said.

Polling will run continuously from 9:00am to 4:00pm. After the voting ends, all ballot boxes will be taken to the Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium, where counting will begin. The entire counting process will be broadcast live, the CEC added.

Meanwhile, the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) has announced a major security initiative for the elections. At another press briefing, RMP Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian said 2,000 police members, including intelligence teams, will be engaged to ensure safety on the day.

"Three layers of security will be in place across the campus. A centralised security ring will cover the polling centres, while additional measures will also be taken outside the university campus."

The RMP commissioner noted that meetings are going on with the university authorities to finalise security measures, including those centring the ballot counting venues. Other law-enforcement agencies will also assist the police in maintaining order.
