After more than three decades, the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) and hall union elections are going to take place on September 25. The polls are drawing attention from both senior and junior students of RU.
Now, as campaigning has gained momentum, a crucial section of the electorate is being closely observed: the freshers. This year, a total of 4,307 first-year students have enrolled at Rajshahi University, forming a decisive bloc of new voters, who could tip the balance in favour of any candidate.
As the countdown to September 25 continues, their opinions, expectations, and preferences are at the heart of the discussion surrounding this historic election. The voices of these new voters underline a clear demand: transparent and welfare-driven leadership that can truly restore the RUCSU as a representative body of the students.
Mohammad Ali Chowdhury, a first-year student of Anthropology, said he would cast his votes for the candidates who are approachable, trustworthy, and capable of effective leadership.
"I want leaders who are simple, friendly, and genuinely student-oriented. Organised yet neutral, with strong communication skills, creativity, and committed to ensuring a safe and eco-friendly campus. We must not allow ragging or guestroom culture to return. If the candidates can promise that, and if they ensure transparency, accountability, and willingness to stand by students' rights, I'll support them," he added.
For fresher Siam Shahriar, the candidates' past actions matter most. "I think we should vote for those who have already worked for the students, especially after the 2024 July Uprising."
Pointing to the activism of student wings like Islami Chhatra Shibir, Siam added, "They have taken some good initiatives for the freshers since our admission, which may give them an edge. But above all, I want a leadership that is humble, student-friendly, and welfare-oriented. The uprising has already changed the nature of campus politics, and RUCSU should reflect that change."
Sabrina Sultana, another fresher, stressed integrity and inclusivity. "I will vote for the candidates, who will work for the ordinary students with honesty and moral values."
"Their priority should be the students' welfare, not personal gain or violent politics. They must address issues like classes, exams, library facilities, and housing. I want someone approachable and friendly, not arrogant or self-serving. Above all, we need leaders who will reject politics of fear, violence, or terror on the campus, and instead create a peaceful and safe environment."
She further noted the importance of gender sensitivity and equal representation: "The new RUCSU leadership should ensure security of the female students, and treat all opinions with equal respect. Ultimately, I hope that the winners will be honest, competent, student-oriented, and symbols of non-violent leadership," she added.
