A Russian flag-carrier ship, MV Melina, has reached Mongla sea port with huge general machinery for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP), BSS reported citing Mongla Port Authority (MPA) Deputy Director Muhammad Makruzzaman.
The ship anchored at the jetty No. 9 on Friday, and left the port after delivery of the goods.
Mr Makruzzaman said the goods will be sent to the RNPP by road.
He said the RNPP machinery and goods have been delivered through the Mongla port since import has began for the project.
Mr Makruzzaman said the arrival of foreign commercial ships at the port has increased. At present, 18 commercial ships consisting of liquefied petroleum gas, coal, gypsum, chemicals such as DAP, TSP, MOP, and containers of various goods remained anchored at different points of the port.
During the first six months of the current 2024-25 fiscal year, 413 commercial ships reached the country and the authorities handled10,386 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) of containers. A total of 5,637 vehicles were imported through 10 vehicle-carrying ships.
Simultaneously, a total of 52,84,471 tonnes of goods were imported and exported through the port, making the port earn Tk 2.1 billion in revenues.
Mr Makruzzaman said 69 navigation buoys were installed for the unhindered movement of the foreign ships in the sea channels. There are scopes of anchoring 47 ships in the jetty, mooring buoys, and anchorage simultaneously.
Apart from this, there are transit sheds, a warehouse, a container yard, 161 reefer plug points for the preservation of frozen foods, a car parking yard, 136 modern handling machines, and 32 supportive boats with tugboats for the welfare of importers and exporters.
