Police arrested on Friday six persons for their alleged involvement in kidnapping a man impersonating police personnel and demanding ransom for the release of the victim.
The arrestees are: Md Rezaul Islam alias Hemel (40), Sheli Begum alias Shila Begum (28), Md Muktajul Sarkar (34), Md Maruf Hasan (25), Noor Mohammad (35) and Md Mahmud Hasan (26).
Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman disclosed the development to the media.
Mr Talebur Rahman said Md Rezaul Islam and Sheli Begum alias Shila Begum along with 10 to 15 unidentified miscreants forcibly picked up one Sahan Ali (50) into a car from a shop -Robin Enterprise- at Naninbagh Titas Road under Khilgaon area in the capital on January 15 over a financial dispute.
When Sahan Ali was being taken away, locals asked the reason and two of them (perpetrators of the kidnap incident) identified themselves as police personnel and threatened them.
He said that on the same day a mobile call from an unspecified number came to the mobile phone of Sahan Ali's son's wife, demanding payment of Tk0.2 million as ransom for the victim's release.
The miscreants also threatened Sahan Ali's family members asking to pay the ransom; otherwise he (Sahan Ali) would be killed and his body would be concealed.
Mr Talebur Rahman further said that Md Sohel Rana, nephew of Sahan Ali, filed a case with Khilgaon Police Station on Thursday (January 16).
He added that police at Khilgaon Police Station confirmed the whereabouts of Sahan Ali by visiting the place of occurrence, carrying out intensive investigation and applying modern information technology.
He said that later with the cooperation of Khustia district police, Sahan Ali was rescued from Md Rezaul Islam's father-in-law's house at Kandirpara in Daulatpur upazila of Khustia district on Friday (January 17).
The six persons were also arrested at the time of rescuing Sahan Ali for their alleged involvement in the kidnap incident.
The arrestees were later produced before a court. Efforts are underway to hunt down the other alleged kidnappers.
