Six products get GI tag

Six local products obtained Geographical Indication (GI) certificates from the government on Thursday.

The products are: Dhakai Maslin (Maslin of Dhaka), Shatranji of Rangpur, Rajshahi silk, Kataribhog and Kalijira rice of Dinajpur and Bijoypur clay-crystalline cellulose composite.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun formally handed over GI certificates to the heads of departments concerned at a seminar organized at Officers' Club in the capital.

The Directorate General of Patent, Design and Trademarks (DPDT) organized the seminar titled 'Intellectual Properties to fulfil the dream of Father of the Nation' and 'World Intellectual Property Day-2021'.

Chairman of Bangladesh Loom Board Md Shah Alam received GI certificate from the minister for Dhakai Maslin while Chairman of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation Md Mushtaq Hasan for Shatranji of Rangpur, Director General of Bangladesh Silk Development Board Abdul Hakim for Rajshahi silk, deputy commissioner of Netrakona district Kazi Md Abdur Rahman for Bijoypur clay-crystalline cellulose composite and Director General of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Dr Md Shajahan Kabir for Kataribhog and Kalijira rice of Dinajpur district.

At the same programme on the day, owner of Bijoy Digital and minister for ICT Mostafa Jabbar and Hisab Limited received certificates for patent while certificates were also given to BD Foods Limited, Jihan Plastic Industries and Aman Plastic Industries for design.

Besides, Pran-RFL Group, Mohona Television Ltd, Access to Information (A2I) Programme, Walton High-Tech Industries Ltd, Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Golden Trade International BD and Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd got certificates in trademark category.

Since the independence of the country, the DPDT has issued 6,021 patent certificates, 18,498 design certificates and 62,609 trademark certificates.

Earlier, the DPDT has awarded GI certificates to Hilsha fish, Jamdani sari and Khirsapat mango.

State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder, industries secretary Jakia Sultana and high officials of the ministry also attended the programme.

The GI registration simply provides recognition for a particular product to have certain qualities associated to or for belonging to a geographical area.
