Six unidentified bodies buried after a year of July Uprising

August 08, 2025 00:00:00

Six bodies, which had been kept in the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after their deaths during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement last year, have been handed over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam, a charitable organisation that arranges burials, reports bdnews24.com.

Shahbag Police Station chief Khalid Mansur said handover of the bodies took place following a court order. The bodies had been in the morgue for over a year. During the period, many people came forward to try and identify them.

"Their DNA profiles were prepared. But none of the claimants' samples matched," he added.

The bodies were brought in the morgue before Aug 5 last year from several areas, including Dhaka's Jatrabari. Post-mortem reports indicated that most of them died from injuries.

Kamrul Ahmed, burial service officer at Anjuman Mufidul Islam, "We received the six bodies and buried those at Jurain Graveyard at around 2pm on Thursday."

Dr Kazi Golam Mukhlesur Rahman, head of the DMCH Forensic Medicine Department, said forensic reports on the bodies had been submitted to police. But as the bodies remained unidentified, they could not be handed over to any family.

"We heard that many came to claim the bodies, but since none could be positively identified, those could not be released," he added.
