Speakers for participation of all to attain gender parity

Speakers at a discussion said the gender parity is important for sustainable development as well as social progress, reports UNB.

They underscored the need for ensuring equal participation of men and women in all spheres for attaining gender parity in the country.

Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center (BYLC) organised the event, 'Balance For Better: Samriddhir Pathe, Ekshathe', at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the city on Friday, marking the International Women's Day.

Divided into two panel discussions, the event saw speakers from diverse sectors connecting 400 participants by sharing insights about collective actions and shared responsibility as the key for driving a gender-balanced world.

In her speech, Shaheen Anam, executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), said, "Mass-level advocacy on gender balance is crucial to create an inclusive work environment and opportunities for women to thrive in workplaces."

Legal Circle Founder Anita Ghazi Rahman echoed Shaheen Anam, saying thinking oneself as a human first, and then male or female can significantly improve the situation.

Farin Daulah, co-founder and managing director of Yellow Brick Road, and Nazma Ara Begum Poppy, Adjunct Faculty of North South University, General Secretary of Visually Impaired People's Society (VIPS) and Project Officer of Handicap International, also spoke on the occasion.

In the second session, BYLC President Ejaj Ahmad said, "Gender balance is not just a women's issue but a social one. Both men and women have to work collectively to strive for gender equality and make positive gains in society."

Imtiaz Ilahi, co-founder of BDRunners and Managing Director of GraphicPeople, and Farzana Kashfi, a development activist and former Head of BRAC Skills Development Programme, also spoke as panel discussants.

Later, all the panelists engaged in an insightful question-and-answer session with the audience.
