The authorities have increased the speed limit on the Dhaka Elevated Expressway to 80kph, reports bdnews24.com.
The new speed limit came into effect on Thursday night, according to Hasib Hasan Khan, a director of the First Dhaka Elevated Expressway Company.
The decision to raise the limit by 20kph was greenlit by the Bridges Division, he said on Saturday.
"After operating the elevated expressway for a year and a half, we noticed that the 60kph limit was too low.
The expressway is well-designed and wide. when a car drives on it with the windows shut, the speed tends to increase naturally. That's why we proposed raising the limit to 80kph," he added.
Traffic police will penalise drivers who breach the new speed limit, said Hasib.
More than 50,000 vehicles use the expressway every day.
